A NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM IN ACAROLOGY

November 24-26, 2007, Bangalore

I CIRCULAR

cir

Mites and ticks have been recognised by humans as a group which affects their lives directly as skin parasites or indirectly as pests of crops, livestock, environment etc. However, a few mite species are being used in the biological control of pest mites, whereas several mite species play a major role in nutrient recycling in various ecosystems. Since several years the role of ticks in debilitating our domesticated animals has been fairly well addressed, as also their role in transmitting diseases like Kyasanur Forest Disease etc. While the mange mites, house dust mites and trombiculid mites have been studied by Veterinary and Medical Acarologists, mite pests affecting our crops have drawn the attention of Agricultural Acarologists. Indeed in recent years the extensive damage caused by the perianth mite to coconut and European Red Mite to apple has caused concern among the Agricultural Acarologists who have been striving to evolve appropriate management strategies.

To facilitate Acarologists in the country to deliberate on the trends in Acarological research during the last few years and the focus for the future, Acarological Society of India, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (New Delhi) and University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore are jointly organising a National Symposium in Acarology “Acari -globalisation and climate change”, during November 2007.

The various themes that would be deliberated upon during the symposium would be:

  1. Influence of climate change on biodiversity of acari
  2. Acari– host interactions
  3. Acari and biotechnology
  4. Acarine ecology and physiology
  5. Globalisation and acarine pests

Those interested in participating and/or presenting papers on mites/ticks are invited to submit extended summaries in the format provided below.
